The Issue:I recently installed Planetside 2 through Steam. When I try to start the game through the launcher, I'm directed to web page, the game doesn't start, and the launcher closes. I doubt that my computer actually fails to meet the minimum requirements like the web page suggests. I'm able to play more recent games on reasonable settings. Specs:OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit, Service Pack 1Processor: AMD FX-8150 3.60 GHz (8 Core)RAM: 8 GBVideo Card: AMD Radeon HD 7700 Attempts to solve:I can find quite a few posts (spanning years) on the Planetside 2 forums and even this subreddit about the issue. In some cases, the OP just has a crappy video card. In other cases, the issue just doesn't get solved.
In some cases, OP is told to delete Planetside2.exe, UserOptions.ini, and some other files from the game directory and run the game validation from the advanced options in the launcher. I've done that (there was no UserOptions.ini to delete since I've never actually started the game, however) and nothing has changed. The next logical step is to just reinstall the game through Steam. But that will take around 4 hours so I'm hoping someone here knows what's going on and has a less time consuming fix. Thanks in advance.
Its via steam, steam is notorious for miscalculating the version needed however the game launcher should pick that up.First thing, go into steam games, common, planetside 2 folders and find launchpad.exe, that is the game executable and the folder is 99.9% portable, so right click drag a link (choose shortcut when you drop it) to your desktop for convenience. Now reboot your machine, run that link to the launcher and see what gives. If still the same message then you can try deleting things from inside the steam games, common, planetside 2 folder. UserOptions.ini, Graphics.ini etc it will just pick them up again.Ultimately if you want to try a reinstall just leave the steam one where it is, get the official launcher (non-steam) and just do a test install somewhere (multiple installs will co-exist happily side by side on a HDD, I have 3 atm) like a normal game and see if that acts the same.If still issues after that it may be worth looking in the log files to see what it think it just installed, are you absolutely sure of your video card model?. When I drag the shortcut to the desktop and open it. It opens in Windows Photo Viewer as an album of icons:/. No idea what's going on there, to be honest.
Steam is weird.I've already tried deleting those files. If I do try reinstalling I'll let you know if using the other launcher works.I am quite confident in my video card model. It was a custom ordered PC and AMD's driver recommendation app identified it as the video card I thought it was.
Also, Windows identifies it as expected in the Device Manager. There'd have to be a pretty serious conspiracy to defraud me if it was actually a different video card. Not to mention that I can run more graphics intensive games without a problem. I have AVG and it runs on a weekly schedule and I manually run Malwarebytes every so often (although I have been meaning to uninstall AVG for privacy reasons, now that I think about it.) so I doubt that that's the issue. If I run the link from the steam games folder it opens Windows Photo Viewer as well. Now I'm wondering how exactly steam does open the launcher. Or any other game.
Everything in that folder opens as an album of images. The folder is question is 'C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamgames' on a normally configured 64 bit Windows system and Steam install, correct?. Running it from the steamapps folder does actually launch the launcher. But then I get the same error when I try to launch the game.

(So much launching.)I was looking in a totally different folder though. You it was the 'games' in your initial comment that through me off. I found Steam/steam/games which is, apparently, just a storehouse of icons. Or are you saying that that folder should also have the game executables and I have a serious problem because it doesn't.
Windows does recognize everything in that folder as a.ico (icon) file.
